In Hoorn since 1972

The taste of Hoorn for more than fifty years.

Spices is a family business. Started in 1972 with takeaway and delivery, grown into a restaurant of its own at Kleine Noord 50. To this day the whole family runs it together.

Our story

From takeaway to the restaurant of today.

  1. 1972

    The start: takeaway and delivery

Our family starts out in Hoorn with Surinamese and Indian dishes for takeaway and delivery, under the name Toko Anand. Roti, curry and tandoori, at a time when the town did not know those flavours yet. As far as the family knows, that makes this the first Surinamese and the first Indian address in Hoorn.

  2. Then

    A restaurant of our own

What started as takeaway and delivery grows into a restaurant of our own at Kleine Noord 50, with a new name: Spices. The same kitchen, the same recipes, but now with a place to sit down together.

  3. Today

A family business, with the whole family

We still work together as a family: in the kitchen and in the dining room. You taste it in the food and you notice it in the service. Guests from the early days still come.

The longest-standing

The first Surinamese and Indian restaurant in Hoorn, and still here.

More than fifty years in the same place says enough. When people in Hoorn think of roti or curry, they think of Spices. Not because we say so, but because the town has been eating with us for generations.
